Recommended Template/ Example of Good Speaker Listener

  1. Speaker shares about needed thought, event, or perspective to be addressed.

  2. Listener listens without interruption; being present. Not thinking of all the things you do not agree with or how you plan to respond. The point is to be curious about what your partner is saying not be correct and tear apart their point of view.

  3. After speaker is done; provided a understand of what they stated “ I heard you say..”; and end it with “Did I get that right?”.

  4. If the Listener got it right, the speaker can say yes; if not repeat or reword what was stated to them. Try to not get annoyed; understand that they may not be following your desired intent.

  5. Once correct; ask the speaker if there is anything else they would like to add. If not, you can respond by asking “May I give a response?” and then switch speakers or follow up with clarifying questions. This allows for the both of you to change the perspective of where you are coming from.

  6. With each response, repeat the speaker-listener steps until that topic is understood or needing to be revisited at another time.
